Nomad Notes 4: Camphor
by Yi Dai

Nomad Notes is a publication series by The Sandwich Club, to showcase the featured artists’ own findings in a certain place and time, through photographic output via risograph printing.

In this issue, Yi brings us back to her hometown of Changsha all the way back to 2006.

Journeying through the lens of a point-and-shoot camera, we walk along camphor-lined streets, rebuilt pavilions and market stalls that feel as though they existed only in that moment, exactly twenty years ago. Amid flux, which cityscapes drift away with time, and what continues to live on?

Yi Dai works across analogue and digital processes. Exploring memory, migration, and landscape, her practice builds tactile structures that trace labour, translation, and the shifting relationships between image, text, and environment.
