Notes on an Imagined City: The Copy as Cure by Svenja Tong
How do cities perform for visitors who await them? And how might tourist gaze turn streets and places into destinations of desire?
Notes on an Imagined City is a 220-page publication developed through a research-through-design approach. Through the lens of Paris Syndrome, where acute emotional distress arises when lived reality fails to portray the idealised expectation, the book traces Paris and its replicas in Hangzhou, Las Vegas, Macau, and Florida, interrogating the reproduction and reconstruction of the image of the city that reflects on longing, cultural projection, and escape.
Through imagery, annotations, and visual languages inspired by doctors’ handwriting, the publication suggests replicas as a speculative cure for disappointed fantasies: what if the shock of encountering could be treated by restaging an ideal elsewhere?
